Nothing wrong with drawing your favourite manga. Claiming it's your own is another story.

How long will you be in japan going to school?
TheStranger2O46  2008-06-28
Yeah I'm a new person watching. Shotamerican? What the hell kind of name is that? Who are you JFK? Has anyone ever told you about your gigantic eyeballs. They're nice and huge! I want to look into that never ending sea that is your right eye and ponder life's riddles because from absurdity and passion often comes judicious truth. Help me find the way...On being an artist you should always strive to be original, but if you are going to copy, copy the best :)

I wanna be a characterrr you can copy me :)
channeIreview  2008-06-27
historical in both visual and performing performing arts "copying" was a common practice and the artist who was copied would be flattered by the experience. The problem came when artist were no longer employed by patrons and had to earn money by the sale of the work in the open market.

why is it harder to get a visa

I think it's ok to copy as a beginner. That's how I learned. But I NEVER claimed anything was my own and posted references. Now I only use references concerning things like poses, textures, perspective angles, proportion, weight distribution, lighting etc. I never actually COPY characters and claim them to be my own. I think it's good to draw from life for reference because the human mind could NEVER remember every detail it sees. :)

Great vid!!! I have told you this before but you are one of the people that inspire me to continue my dream of setting up the employment program for people with disabilities in Japan. That's funny the end in my last vid made you jump. I'll be in Japan in March to looking for a place to live. To answer your question... in stand-up there is a very fine line in using someone's material as inspiration and stealing the joke. So in the case, it comes down to view of right and wrong. Cheers!!!!

I'll use the writing rule. I beleive It's okay to copy if you reference the original artist and provide a link to that artists page if they have one. Don't try to pass a copy off as your own creation and try to take credit from it. In shorter words, don't plagiarize. If you're in school that's fair ground for getting the boot. PS: I like your videos, watched every one of them. I admire your determination to make your dream into reality. Keep on keeping on. Peace.

I'm going to agree with the copying in the beginning because if you're starting out, I mean beginner beginner, you don't really have much personal style yet, so once you are better, you can branch out and do your own thing. I adore your style! :D Can't wait to see more art from you! The storyboards look great and well laid out. :)

mmmm very nice storyboard! suge!!

What's funny to me about Japanese movie audiences is how 90% of them sit thru the entire end credits to Hollywood movies, and most can't read the credits. Hmmm.... :) All artists are inspired by other artists. An "homage" is cool if credit is given - Shotamerican after Takahashi. Copying is just stealing and I don't like it. It's lazy and shows lack of talent.

Wow!! Nice job on the story boards. Just keep at it, don't let things get you down. Copying is okay for personnal use(or beginning artist), but you shouldn't display it on the internet. People should put up original art work on the web or for public display.

blatantly copying art should not be tolerated. That sorta thing is something you do on scrap pieces of paper when you are extremely bored. Original art is the best, of course. I have a BA in Game Design and I don't suggest people go to college for Game Design lol. Just pick the specific job you want then educate yourself on exactly what you chose. I like your style of anime, not too chibi and not too americanish lol. Nice video /rant

Active sharing ROCKS! 動画を再生中の他のユーザー(2) Gimmeabreakman ElevenColors Copying... my limited, somewhat twisted POV comes from knowing musicians, some who not only flip burgers but make the patties with their bare hands out of raw hamburger. Depends on intent and how rich the copied artist is. Even if a record label/publisher is rich, the artist might not be. Not cool to make money off poor artists, but making good artists rich is cool. That make any sense? (*^_^*)

Hey Shotamerican! Thanks for your advice on going to school in Japan, I have been to Japan once and can't wait to go back and stay for a while. I really would like to get a job in the translation field, possibly in the video game industry, but who knows! I will definitely take your advice and keep studying Japanese as much as I can though. I always enjoy your videos, so I really don't think your an "Idiot", so please don't be so hard on yourself! noahsan
lildreamertina  2008-06-27
Omg i think you are the greatest! keep up the videos and all your hard work!
Spikeygal  2008-06-27
I think that it depends on your ability, I guess. If you're just starting out, then yeah, it's nice to have a sort of safety net of copying to help you learn. But if you're capable of doing your own stuff, I think that's when copying becomes a no-no. Fanart is fine by me, so long as the artist adds something oft heir own to it, if they're not just copying it all.
Gimmeabreakman  2008-06-27
Uh!? My comment is gone! WAAAAAAA! Good to see you again! um... I think it is fine to copy in the beginning!
