just as strings theory is the unification of einstain's relativity and quantic theory, I wonder if one day we will see a theory of the unification of GOD and sience, i think that will be the bigest challenge human race will have.
masada672 2008-06-22
Sorry to burst your bubble, but God and sins, do not apply here.
fireitupbaby 2008-06-21
Did they mention God in this video at all? If you want to ponder on infinite things go ponder on why finite sins deserve infinite punishment.
kapwns 2008-06-16
how did god get involved? the reason the dimensions came about in string theory was b/c with einstein's relativity theory plus additional very very small dimensions, results in a merging of the 4 forces of nature, gravity, weak, strong nuclear force, electromagnetic force at high temperatures like those ATBB. strings get involved in taming how small/slow we can go before things lose sense. strings say, "after us!", point particles keep going infinitely. now we dont start as an infinite point

-2 -1 0 1 2 3 It is impossible to square negative numbers, only positive. Its Possible time is like that, if you square a neg number well we get an "imaginary number" and well a positive we get a real decimal. So perhaps WE cant see or exist anything before the big bang, but this doesn't mean there was NOTHING, using the simple square technique we see that there was SOMETHING, just not visible or detectable to us. The string theory and math prove this. But it still a "theory".

I have a real problem with adding extra spatial dimensions to the observable 3, in order to make the mathematics of a thoery work. I'm not a physicist (I am studying it) but it just seems a bit ad hoc to do this.

What is interesting about this Theory is that those 11 dimensions could be anything. We cant begin to ponder. As a Christian, I find it easy to understand that one of such dimensions could very well be infinite, in which its "beginnings" are eternal ... God ... and that the other dimensions were created from He who is Eternal. Overlapping so that He could be everywhere at every moment in time at once.
xbatman1x 2008-06-10
exactly, there is no other explaination
kuni45 2008-06-10
in my eyes, this theory answers nothing. Before we go about explaining the 11th dimension, we should explain where everything came from. In string theory, the big bang is explained, but who created those parallel universes. The only theory which explains the creation of matter and energy that we know of is Religion, and they are more preposterous then string theory and m theory.
Omegax9000 2008-06-10
prove it lol
Omegax9000 2008-06-10
this is missing piece might be god and we just got the story wrong.
xxoXfrenchieXoxx 2008-06-07
yes, this explains many of the theories that exist about the universe, but at the same time, creating even MORE mysteries =]
but this is a better explanation of THE mystery than just saying : "oh - the big bang"
greyonednb 2008-05-22
i believe this theory :)
i also believe the universe didnt start from 0 , it must be something endless , like a waveform with different peaks , and some peaks are able to create something.
the greyone theory :D

and the term Billion and trillion are different ideas depending on if you are in Britain or US. The US billion refers to 1,000 million (1,000,000,000), whereas the British billion refers to 1 million million (1,000,000,000,000). So it could be due to that... depending on where they were educated...
ibeacz 2008-05-19
interesting ^^
Trickycandyfloss 2008-05-12
Love this, those guys have big brains and one day some one will figure it out. Its a damn site better than the other explanation!
AlesNemo1 2008-05-10
Mr. Steinhardt: "... trillionth of a millimetre."
Mr. Ovrut: "That's taking a millimetre and dividing it by 10 with 20 zeros after it."
However:
thousandth 10^(-3)
millionth 10^(-6)
...
trillionth 10^(-18)
trilliardth 10^(-21)
That means if you take a millimetre and divide it by 10^21 (10 with 20 zeros after it), you get a trilliardth of a millimetre not a trillionth.
And at the end of the video, QuarksAreStrange is saying: "Remember: M-Theory relies on perfect mathematics." :)
xboi108th 2008-05-09
hold up, wiki trillion.
there are 2 numbers associated with that: 10^12 and 10^18.
so one trillionth of a millimeter could mean 10^-14 meters or 10^-20 meters.
where on earth did you get 17 zeros from?
nonphixional1 2008-05-04
The concept of existence is fascinating. The existence of an omnipotent being would be a product of probability for there is a chance nothing would be. what surrounds the parallel branes, some other type of space time continuium and what determines the nature and position of the branes. th3e concept of SCALE is just as interesting. all of the universes could just be particles within a larger particle lets call that an ATOMIC. BASICALLY OUR UNIVERSE COULD BE A CELL IN AN ORGANISM
AlesNemo1 2008-05-04
I think they contradict each other at 3:26.
One trillionth of a millimetre is 1 divided by 10 with 17 zeros after it, not 20.
PremiumWater 2008-04-22
It was infinitely small but not perfectly small or so they say.
isbeltv 2008-04-20
so wait...did these two membranes murge to create the Universe or did their mere encounter create our Universe? Essentially, i want to know if our Universe is a product of the ripples alone or are we a merging of two parallel universes?
QuarksAreStrange 2008-04-19
(Re:Justas116)
The big bang model says the universe, before its rapid expansion, was a point infinitely small and infinitely dense. Our [better] understanding of the universe starts very shortly after that but I wouldn't know if the universe was still smaller than a quark. I've looked it up without finding the answer I was seeking.
Does anyone know how big was the universe at [or right after] Planck's epoch? Anyone?
(By the way justas, electrons are much much smaller than quarks)
MDSakamoto 2008-04-17
If there are in fact an infinite number of membranes, do these membranes have an infinite barrier of space they take up? Is that infinite as well? This idea is going to make my brain explode.
justas116 2008-04-17
Do universe before the big bang was smaller than kvark???
